7 Common Dental Restoration Treatments

A woman smiles showing off her teeth after cosmetic dental work.

Restorative dentistry focuses on rebuilding teeth that are damaged, weakened, or missing so you can chew comfortably, protect your long-term oral health, and regain everyday function. These treatments strengthen tooth structure, stabilize your bite, and prevent further problems while preserving as much natural tooth as possible.

Common restorative options include:

  • Dental fillings
  • Dental bonding
  • Dental crowns
  • Root canal therapy
  • Dentures
  • Dental bridges
  • Dental implants

Together, these procedures restore strength, stability, and comfort, helping you maintain a healthy, functional smile at every stage of life.

At Norman Smile Center, you’ll receive expert restorative dental treatments from our experienced team, led by Dr. Kristen Campbell and Dr. Donna Sparks. We’ll work together with you to restore strength, function, and comfort to your smile with care that truly supports your long-term oral health.

Restorative Dentistry

What is Restorative Dentistry?

Teeth play a vital role in much more than appearance—they support clear speech, comfortable chewing, and the natural shape of the face. When even one tooth is damaged or missing, it can disrupt daily life and contribute to long-term oral health concerns.

Restorative dentistry focuses on repairing or replacing teeth to:

  • Improve chewing function.
  • Protect oral health.
  • Restore comfort and confidence.

Although restorative treatments often improve aesthetics, their primary purpose is to rebuild strength, stability, and function.

The 7 Common Restorative Dentistry Treatments

7 Common Restorative Treatments in Dentistry

Restorative dentistry includes a wide range of proven treatments designed to address different types of tooth damage or tooth loss. Understanding these options makes it easier to feel confident about your care and determine which solution best fits your needs.

Here are 7 of the most common restorative treatments used in dentistry to repair, restore, and protect your teeth.

1. Dental fillings.

Dental fillings are one of the most frequently performed restorative procedures. When a cavity develops, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed and the space is filled with a durable material that stops the progression of decay.

Most fillings today use tooth-colored composite resin, which blends naturally with your smile. Amalgam fillings may be recommended in certain situations for their exceptional strength. After numbing the area, the dentist removes the decay, places the filling, and restores the tooth, usually within a single visit.

2. Dental bonding.

Dental bonding is a conservative restorative treatment used to rebuild teeth that are chipped, worn, weakened, or structurally compromised. A tooth-colored composite resin is applied to the damaged area, shaped to restore proper form and function, and then cured to create a durable, stable surface that supports comfortable chewing.

Bonding is a reliable way to strengthen at-risk teeth while preserving healthy enamel, making it an excellent option for restoring everyday function without extensive treatment.

At Norman Smile Center, we offer the Bioclear Method, an advanced bonding technique that uses a molded matrix and heated composite to “overmold’’ the tooth. This creates a stronger, more uniform restoration that reinforces the tooth, seals vulnerable areas, and provides long-lasting protection, especially in cases of wear, small fractures, or gaps caused by tissue loss.

3. Dental crowns.

A dental crown is like a cap that covers a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns are recommended when decay or structural damage is too extensive for a filling, or following root canal therapy.

Crowns may be made of porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of materials. Porcelain and ceramic provide a highly natural look, while metal options offer outstanding durability for back teeth. Typically completed over two visits, crowns can last 10–15 years or longer with proper care.

Getting a crown usually takes two visits. At the first appointment, your dentist prepares your tooth and makes an impression. You’ll wear a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made. At the second visit, your dentist removes the temporary crown and cements the permanent one in place. With good oral hygiene and care, crowns can last 10 to 15 years or longer.

4. Root canal therapy.

Root canal therapy treats teeth with infected or severely damaged pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth. Without timely treatment, the infection can spread and lead to tooth loss.

During a root canal procedure, the dentist removes the infected tissue, cleans and disinfects the canal, and seals the tooth. A crown is often placed afterward for additional protection. Modern techniques make root canals comfortable, and many patients experience immediate relief from pain.

Many people worry that root canals are painful, but modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure comfortable, and a root canal relieves the pain caused by an infected tooth. Root canal therapy also allows patients to keep their natural tooth instead of having it extracted, which is the best option whenever possible.

5. Dentures.

Dentures are removable appliances used to replace multiple missing teeth. Depending on your needs, you may receive:

  • Full dentures to replace all teeth in an arch, or
  • Partial dentures to replace several missing teeth while working with remaining natural teeth

Both types are custom made to fit your mouth.

Dentures can be traditional or implant-supported. Implant-supported options offer enhanced stability, helping prevent slipping and allowing for stronger, more comfortable chewing. An adjustment period is normal, but most patients adapt well with time and guidance.

6. Dental bridges.

Dental bridges replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the natural teeth adjacent to the gap. When you have a gap, the surrounding teeth can slowly move into that space, which can lead to problems with your bite alignment. Bridges prevent this and help you maintain proper bite alignment.

Bridges look and function just like natural teeth. With proper care and regular dental visits, a bridge can last for many years.

Options for bridges include traditional bridges, Maryland bridges, and implant-supported bridges.

  • Traditional bridges are attached to crowns on the neighboring teeth.
  • Maryland bridges use a metal or porcelain framework that bonds to the back of adjacent teeth.
  • Implant-supported bridges attach to dental implants instead of natural teeth.

7. Dental implants.

Dental implants are often considered the gold standard for tooth replacement because they permanently restore both appearance and function with exceptional long-term stability. A dental implant is a tiny titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone to act as an artificial tooth root.

Once the implant has healed, a connector and custom crown are added to create a restoration that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. Implants have a high success rate and can last a lifetime with proper care. However, not everyone is a candidate for implants, so your dentist will evaluate your bone health and overall oral condition to determine if they’re right for you.

What are the Signs that You Need Treatment?

Signs You Need Restorative Dentistry

Restorative treatment becomes necessary when teeth are damaged, weakened, or lost, and early attention is always beneficial. Understanding the signs can help prevent small issues from developing into more complex problems.

You may need restorative dentistry if you are experiencing symptoms like:

  • Tooth pain or sensitivity to temperature or pressure. Pain when you bite down, or sensitivity to hot and cold foods, often signals a problem that needs attention.
  • Visible decay or damage, including cracks, chips, or dark spots. If you can see it, then you need to see your dentist.
  • Missing teeth. Even one missing tooth can affect your bite and cause other teeth to shift.
  • Difficulty chewing or avoiding certain foods. If you’ve changed your diet because of pain or difficulty when chewing, restorative procedures can help improve your comfort, confidence, and health.
  • Worn teeth from grinding, clenching, or erosion. This may appear as teeth that look shorter or flatter than they used to or than surrounding teeth.

If you notice any of these issues, don’t wait. Dental issues typically get worse over time, so addressing problems early helps protect your long-term oral health, maintain comfortable function, and avoid more extensive treatment in the future.
