Composite Fillings

Composite fillings, also known as tooth-colored fillings, are dental restorations designed to blend well with teeth and appear more natural than dark amalgam fillings. Tooth-colored fillings can be used to repair chipped or broken teeth in addition to filling in decayed areas or cavities. Composite fillings are durable, require less tooth structure removal than amalgam or silver fillings and because they are aesthetically pleasing, can be used as a cosmetic bonding material to improve the appearance of front teeth.

During your visit, your gums and teeth will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic near the site of the filling. Next, your dentist will use an instrument to remove the damaged or decayed portion of your tooth. A gel is applied to clean out lingering debris or bacteria and the composite resin filling is inserted into the prepared tooth. The filling is then shaped and polished. The process is quick, easy and relatively pain-free.
Aside from taking precautions while your mouth is numb from the anesthetic, you should be able to return to normal activity and oral care immediately after your visit. It’s normal for treated teeth to experience some sensitivity in the days following treatment and soreness at the injection site is also common.
